I was thrilled to be invited to the Avant-Garde collaboration. A big challenge, but a most welcome one, to make something incredibly unique and experimental. The first thing I thought about was all those weird and wacky Avant-Garde shoes available out there. Lots of research done, which brought up images of the most fabulous shoes, some of which you would wonder if you could ever wear and truly feel comfortable walking in. I was really taken with the fabulous cage shoe by Dolce & Gabbana and decided to use it as my inspiration. My first thought was, it had to have a little exotic bird encased inside, which, if it were a real shoe, would swing on its little perch as the owner walked. It was a very technically challenging shoe but I loved every part of making it.
