Ride for life

Ride for life

This is the cake that I made for a very special friend. Matt loves technology and he loves his bike riding. The colour scheme for the party was black and white and once I got the idea of the cube angled on top of the cake I just had to go with it….Truly ‘thinking outside the square’! The top cube is only polystyrene because the base tier was plenty big enough for all the guests. I hand drew the bicycle images and used wafer paper for the tread pattern. There was even a spare tyre at the back! The base cube is a double stacked vanilla bean butter cake layered with milk chocolate ganache. This tier has lots of meaning. More clean design to reflect Matts European origin, the marbled hills he climbed with his bike rides and the keyboard images, squares and circles from his job and love of technology. But…..there is also more to this design too. Most of us who know Matt, know the incredible fight for life he has endured to overcome leukaemia. His body is still adaptping after the bone marrow operation and so many chemo sessions before that. So the grid on top is like the rows of fluorescent lights you see as you are wheeled into surgery, the small grid of dots are the multitude of pills he had to swallow every day and the bars on the side like a temperature scale that would fluctuate dangerously for him so often. I am so honoured to have been able to make this cake for you Matt. To truly celebrate with your beautiful family and friends that you are still with us and for hopefully for many more years to come! Cheers to you my brave friend
