“BEAUTY WILL BE EDIBLE OR IT WILL NO LONGER BE”

In this manner we have decided to name this piece, a tribute to the work of the surrealist painter Salvador Dalí. The phrase was written by the artist into an article at the French magazine “Minotaure”. That article was about the modernist architecture, but if we apply that phrase to the world of cake designing, it takes on a literal sense!

The overall aesthetic of the cake was inspired by the facade of the house-museum of Dalí, located in Figueres, his birthplace. The building is decorated with golden female figures, giant eggs and breads (The foods always been very present in all his work)

The main element of our piece is a hand painted illustration made with edible colorings on a fondant sheet. In this illustration we have represented Dalí as a crazy baker, adapting two major icons of his work, such as the melting clocks (which have been changed per cookies) and the leggy elephants (which here are carrying cupcakes)

The piece is crowned by a figure in fondant that performs his famous “Soft Self-Portrait with Fried Bacon” painted by airbrush with edible colorings. The pedestal of this figure is “levitating” in reference to the time when Dalí was painting all the elements of his pictures floating, without anything touch anything.

Hope you like the cake, we have enjoyed very much making it, because Dali’s work is really exciting!
