Tribute to Barrios (Sugar Skull Bakers 2015)

My Sugar Skull piece for the collaboration is a tribute to an extraordinary musician who influenced my life since childhood. Paraguayan Agustín Barrios Mangoré. He is famous for his stunning composition of the three part work, ‘La Catedral’. His life was also tinged with sadness which is reflected in the first movement. This work received the nod from Segovia which was a rare event. Barrios’ style of music is inspired by J S Bach who composed the Lute Suites, later transposed for the classical guitar. He is also famous for his tremolo works. In all his compositions, his fingering defies nature but achieves the most magnificent sounds … and a few stretched tendons!

I am thankful for this opportunity to give credit to this humble and dedicated man who, along with Segovia, brought recognition to the classical guitar resulting in immense joy and harmony across the globe. His music lives on forever.

The guitar, marigolds and roses are traditional features in this Mexican celebration. The ‘Wooden Carving Ornamental Guitar’ body is fruit cake and everything else is sugar, royal icing and marzipan. All hand modelled and hand painted. The lace on the board was made with the aid of a lace mat.

I included the same gumpaste rosary that I made for last year’s tribute to my mother which was made in the imitation of her own mother of pearl rosary. Without her sacrifices, my life would not have taken the musical shape that it did. I have everything to thank her for.
