This cake was made as a surprise for a 90 year old lady’s birthday. She was originally from Austria and her family really wanted that depicted in the cake. My first thought was the Sound of Music, then mountains, snow and edelweiss. I was asked to also make a sugar figurine of the lady in national costume.
I am a huge fan of Natasha Collins. Her painted cakes are amazing, so using her style for inspiration I made a template of the mountain houses, left them to dry hard, then hand painted them. I did the same with the butterfly’s. I then hand painted the mountains, trees and some edelweiss. I love the combination of the houses, the butterfly’s and the painting I think it adds dimension to the cake.
The figurine is made from flower paste. I used gold wire for the glasses – this is the only inedible piece on the cake.
Hope you like it. Sam. X
