The birthday boy who this cake is for is quite the outdoorsman. In the end I decided to go with a single theme rather than incorporating all his interests.
I know there are quite a few of these cakes out there & I’m not sure who is responsible for the original design but I used one by tchitwood as my guide. I did make a few changes to her design to try & make it more my own.
I used a paisley shaped pan for the cake as it somehow reminds me of water. I marbled the fondant & after applying it to the cake I made a few ripples in it to give it more of water effect.
The bass is rkt covered in fondant with gumpaste fins. He really came to life once I painted him with a mixture gel color/vodka. I was so pleased with how he turned out that I almost didn’t want to part with him….lol
The cat tails are made from gumpaste (that I thought would never dry with the humidity) on wooden skewers covered with floral tape. I painted them with gel color/vodka to give them a little more depth.
I wrote “Happy Birthday” with edible marker in a font called fish hook.
The mother of the birthday boy almost cried when I delivered it & said she had goose bumps cause it was so well done :-) Love those reactions!
Hope you all like him too.
