Presenting…The Red Carpet Cake Collaboration!

Red Carpet events are THE place to see the boldest and most stunning creations from the design industry. This collaboration is all about celebrating the genius behind the stitches and sketches by transforming fashion, into cake…

I did a lot of research on this dress, the Chartreuse coloured Chinoiserie-embroidered Dior couture gown that Nicole Kidman wore turned heads in the Oscars of 1997.

It was the first time in a long time that an Haute Couture gown had been worn onto the red carpet. It was unconventional and seemed jarring to many at the time. The late Joan Rivers was reported to have yelled at her in the most obnoxious whiny New York accent: “Nicole! Come tell me why you wore such an ugly color!”.

It was a daring choice but the fashion risk paid off. Up until today, it is still in the Best Oscar Dresses of All Time list. This dress literally raised the bar of what we expect to see at red carpet events. It also made history for Nicole. Before this dress she was only known as Mrs Cruise who happen to be an actress. But after that night at the Oscars she had suddenly become a Style Icon and a Movie Star.

The highlight of the dress was actually the netted back. But there are very few pictures of it. After a lot of digging I was finally able to find a rare handful of them. I decided to include the tassels and netting on the back of the dress onto my cake. All the details were hand cut and layered to give a 3d effect. The net is fondant squeezed through an extruder and arranged in a way to look like it loops over, to give net like effect. I decided to make the flower on the top look like the one on the dress by cutting out the different shapes and layering them together.
