I made this gravity defying cake for the 50 Years of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory collaboration. I chose to depict Charlie floating in the Fizzy Lifting Drink room, attempting to stop his ascent toward the fan located at the top of the room.
Charlie if made of red velvet cake, filled will chocolate buttercream, and covered in chocolate ganache. His head and limbs are fondant and modeling chocolate over rice krispie treats. The bubbles are made of gelatin. The entire structure is 2′×2′, and Charlie is about 20" in length, finger to end of torso. He is suspended on a copper structure.
This cake was challenging for me in many ways. It was by far the most technically structured cake I have attempted, and I’m proud to say remained very solid. It was also my first time modeling a human face. This turned out to be far more difficult than I imagined, but I’m really pleased with how he turned out! I hope you like him!
