Millennium Falcon Birthday Cake

I made this as a birthday cake for a special young man recently. He wanted a big Star Wars cake. The spaceship didn’t exactly lend itself to lots of cake, so instead of making an armature for the ship to sit on, I just cut the whole thing out of cake and covered the parts of the cake I didn’t want to seen in black fondant. It gave me the extra servings I needed without making kitchen cakes, and I spent the majority of my time decorating instead of cutting wood and pipe for the armature. For reference, the cake is sitting on a 22″×22″ board (the biggest board that will fit in my refrigerator!)

You can see a quick filpagram of the making of this cake on my Instagram page: http://instagram.com/p/w5FCXIgTf3/

Thanks Bethann! A friend of ours let us borrow a model he had of it, and that made reproducing some of those details much easier! At some point though you just start adding details will-nilly to make it look good!! ;-)

Thanks everyone, so glad you like it! There’s a good 40 hours of decorating on that cake, and it’s a shame that the lion’s share of it is in the top 3 inches! :-)
