I was honoured to be asked to make a Christmas cake for the Grace Crocker foundation, a local charity that helps families with sick children. Living on a small island (for those of you that don’t know Jersey it’s only 9 × 5 miles, with a population of 90,0000 people) we don’t have the same intensive care facilities as those in big countries and so sick children and adults who need specialist care have to travel to the UK, France and around the World to be treated. This can place a huge financial and emotional burden on a lot of families. The cost of flights and accommodation can be too much for a lot of families, this combined with the emotional distress of having to be away from home for, at times long periods of time, often leaving other children, partners and family behind.
A very dear friend of mine’s daughter had a rare form of cancer, she was only 5 when diagnosed. She had to travel to France. The Grace Crocker foundation helped with the cost of this and also provided emotional support. Whilst the treatment was successful, sadly the cancer has returned and this brave little girl is having to fight for her life again.
So, this charity means a lot to me and I hope they raise lots of money at their charity ball tomorrow night.
It was an absolute pleasure making this cake. When it was collected today, the lady openly cried, which of course made me cry! It’s true what they say, giving is so much better than receiving! Much love and Christmas hugs to you all. Sam. X
