Dia de los Muertos Gorrion (sparrow)

Tattoo artist Jordana Hawen of SugarCoffinArt makes the cutest wide-eyed characters and she was the right amount of inspiration for my Sugar Skull Baker contribution. Dedicated to some fine feathered friends who once occupied my childhood…Cottontail and Cottontail Two.

Body is made of brownies, covered in black fondant, wings are Nori (I tried wafer paper, but found they were curling a bit too much). The head is RKT and cake covered in black fondant, her eye is white gum paste. The base is an 8 × 2 inch chocolate cake covered in black fondant. For edible paint I used 2 colors diluted with vodka. From thesugart.com “Kiwi Green” and “white”. I free-handed my design, and as corny as it sounds, let my paint brush do the talking. She stood 6.5 inches high and was 5.34 in from beak to tail. I love her, I couldn’t bear to see her eaten though. sadface. Thank you for looking friends xxoo
