I made this a couple of weeks ago for my eldest son’s 7th birthday. He loves playing his guitar and this cake is based on his actual guitar. I had seen many photos of guitar cakes on the internet, but they were all lying down, I wanted to do something a bit different (especially after the piano cake I made for my youngest). So I decided to go for a guitar standing on its side!
This cake did test my patience a little (just like my son – haha!!). It was mainly the guitar strings which caused me a great deal of pain. I had gone out and bought a new packet of dental floss thinking this would be perfect for guitar strings. I strung the guitar together and it all looked amazing – until I stood the guitar up and then the strings all drooped. I thought of several ways of trying to stop them drooping and sadly they all failed. Then at 12.30 am on the morning of my son’s birthday, I had a light bulb moment and worked some magic with florist wire, and it did the trick! The staves on the board were hand painted and the notes were all hand drawn.
The cake was a chocolate and walnut cake with maple syrup buttercream. With every cake I learn something new – with this one the lesson learnt was ’don’t use chopped nuts in a cake you need to carve’ – haha!!
