Yellow Digger Cake for Operation Sugar

This is my 1st official Operation Sugar cake. Operation Sugar is an organization that teams up bakers with seriously sick kids so they can have a celebration and not worry about their challenges they are faced with for a little while. Baby Luka is all but 1 year old and is awaiting a Bone Marrow transplant next week in Starship hospital.
This urgent request for a cake maker in Auckland was posted on Facebook at 10 pm on Wednesday night for Friday morning. I had just taken a cake break when I saw the post. I had a few things on but could not resist and had to say yes! My heart went out when I heard about his condition.
He loved Little Yellow Digger – so made him my version in cake. Even the Digger is cake! Not precise or to scale – but just my interpretation in cake! I got the photo inspiration online – as I had no time to think up a design. The challenge I had was that it had to be Soy and Dairy free! That said – I made the cake with Olive Oil and the Buttercream with Olivani Olive Oil spread. The only problem is it does not set hard! So I had a very soft cake to cover, no sharp edges and also had a bit of movement under the fondant. I also used as little Tylo as I could but had to add a bit to the Digger scoop otherwise it wouldn’t stand up! But all in all – I delivered it in one piece and Luka was very happy when he saw it – he gave me such a lovely pat on my cheek and quickly grabbed a rock and ate it! Bless! I wish him well – with big dreams, great achievement and big things to do in life ahead.
