Hi all,

Just wanted to say hello. I must say the quality of cakes on here is absolutely amazing (if somewhat daunting!). I suppose I am a creative person, I teach Design and Technology (Product Design) but grew up watching my mum making cakes at home.

Since my son came along I have had a go at making his birthday cakes each year (4 in total) with differing successes.

I am certain that the year gap between cakes is limiting my progress however, if work frees up a bit I might make a few more to keep my hand in.

I am very fortunate in that I have the use of my workshop at work so I am able to make jigs and templates using the laser cutter and other machines.

My biggest mistakes so far have been with trying to ice the cakes in the height of summer – although I am in UK, we do sometimes experience 26 degrees plus which always seem to coincide when I am making the birthday cake. I also think I was rolling the icing out too thin, and not getting the crumb coat to set properly.

Anyway, that’s a little bit about me. If you have any tips then do feel free to pass them on!

Some of my guilty pleasures are lookin at the beautiful cake shops in Brighton (there is an amazing chocolate cakes hope too!) and watching some of those American shows on Freesat where they commission novelty and exciting cakes – having said that I haven’t seen any for a while.

Kind regards,

Daniel
