How do I make branches?

I have a request to do a cake similar to the one pictured above. I am at a loss as to the best way to go about making the branches. Would the safest bet be to just purchase some artificial branches? The cake will be for the first part of Aug so it could be rather warm by then although the cake is for an inside venue that is air conditioned. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for your help :-)

Hi there. I’m new to CakesDecor and this is the first time I give advice, so it might be absolutely rubbish. But for what it’s worth, here goes: Modeling Chocolate maybe? Alternatively gum paste or modeling paste, but the chocolate tastes better. You could use wire as well covered in brown floristry tape. Hope this helps.

You can roll out long pieces of gumpaste or mexican paste with your fingers, cut, shape and dry. But I’m guessing theses branches on this cake are floral wire covered in coloured gumpaste. Then shaped. I personally wouldn’t use modeling chocolate as it won’t be eaten off the wire.

yes June I think you are right. If I make fine branches like that I tend to just cover the wire and brown florist tape and make it thicker and bumpier in some parts with the tape and then twist the end and stretch it a bit to look realistic, that way no one will attempt to eat it either. Good luck with it Kelly x

Thank you ladies for all of your suggestions.

Ellie your idea of the brown florist tape over the wire sounds like the least painful way to do it. I think I’ll go that route.

June, what is Mexican paste? I am not familiar with it.

Thanks again!

Just another medium to work with. Very similar to gumpaste, except it dries much harder, and is very sturdy. Especially for standing projects, like a picture frame, etc.

Hi Kelly,
you can use real branches as well and decorate them with flowers and leaves made of sugar or wafer paper. Just clean them and take care that the tree is non-toxic.
