Thoughts on Dummy Cakes...

What are your thoughts on dummy cakes? For example, when someone wants a four (or more) tier cake but, only needs servings for much less than a four tier would serve. Do you do it? How do you charge?
I’ve come across this several times in my business and each time the client seems to think that the dummy cake doesn’t add to the price of the cake and are quite shocked when I tell them differently. Dummy cakes don’t take any less time to decorate. I don’t think they cost much less either by the time you order the styrofoam forms and pay shipping.

I agree 100%, they cost just as much as real cake. People just don’t understand that, you will need to explain it to them. It will cost “X” amount to decorate a foam dummy. Leave the decision up to them.

I usually suggest making the tiers smaller to get more height. Example use a 4"-5"-6"-7" or what ever to get the proper servings but also make a it look taller.

That’s a good suggestion, MsGF. I usually don’t do anything smaller than an 8"-6". Sounds like something that small and tall would need a center dowel through all the tiers.
