Topic tags/keywords: advice question

I’m making a cake for a friend of a friend and I am putting a gum paste airplane on top. It will be a fondant covered cake and I will also have some other (mostly flat) embellishments on it. What I’m wondering is would I need to put a support under the airplane? And if so…what is the best way to support it? Fondant covered board? Dowel rods? Both? Neither? I’m clueless here, but I want the finished product to come out nice. Any advice for a newbie? TIA

If the airplane is going to be heavy I would put supports underneath it. I have put dowels even sometime some straws cut to height underneath heavy decorations, otherwise it may sink down into the cake.

What size will the airplane be approximately? What size will the cake be?

I am putting it on an 8” round cake (4” high). It is about 6 inches long. I just weighed it and it is 4.7 oz.

Well, I think with the dimensions it would be visually fine if you made a 5” or 6” circle of fondant or gumpaste and let it harden. Then place on top of the cake and then the airplane. You shouldn’t need anything more than that. To be honest with you thought, if it were me I’d wouldn’t worry about supporting it unless you made really small landing gear than could puncture the fondant. If your fondant has been on the cake for several hours and had a chance to harden some before you place the plane on, you should be good to go.
