I am a self taught decorator having started when my daughter was about 1 year old. It was a disaster of a cake and looked awful, but I have persevered for the last forty years and read everything I possibly could on cake decorating. Once the Internet became available to anyone, (yes, I'm that old where it wasn't just like any other electronic gadget that everyone had. I actually lived in the dark ages when there was no Internet) then I started watching tutorials and searching anywhere and everywhere to keep improving the skills I had. Now I consider myself a cake decorating addict! I've had my fair share of horrible cakes, and I have also had a few pretty good ones too. I can only attribute that to never giving up, and practice, practice, practice. My deepest desire is to take a class on Lambeth. It is one field I have longed to learn since I was young, and now so few classes are even offered. I would hate to see this magnificent art form completely die out.
I've just started learning to work in fondant and gum paste in the last 3 years. For most of my life, I have only used butter cream and royal icing. I am also a stay at home baker and because of my age, I like to do this as more of a hobby now rather than a business.
