You can travel with the tiers stacked – all of the advice above is right on… I always put a dowel through the cakes (top to bottom) to make sure the tiers don’t shift.
If the cake is going to be outdoors, you may want to make the buttercream frosting with a hi-ratio shortening/butter combination – if your frosting is made with butter only, your icing will suffer in the heat.
