Free Cakes For Kids #2: A quiet time ......

Time for my second instalment of my Free Cakes For Kids venture…
This month we have been rather quiet! I don’t know why, maybe everyone is just hiding and the professionals that make the referrals just think we need a holiday!
I am just sat here hoping that a child is not going without a cake though ….
but we have done 3 :-) so that is something!
Mine was this super cute Hedgehog. I fell in love with the one Suzi Witt made on Pretty Witty Cakes, so knew I had to tweak it a bit and turn it into a princess for the little girl it was going to.
My other challenge is to reduce the actual costs of cakes I make for the children who need them.
This is because I can only afford to offer the bakers (including myself) £5 per cake we make. Now that is a challenge don’t you think?
So this is where frugal me comes in!
every little bit of buttercream is frozen, spare cakes baked as spares are frozen. all those cups of ganache are also frozen. Every little bit of icing is wrapped and labelled well (and dictates what colours I make my cakes and decorations)….
So I think you get the picture …..
I got out my cut offs of cake to use and baked smaller cakes than suggested on the tutorial video,
I put together my vanilla buttercream and some left over dark chocolate ganache and …. hey presto …. I got chocolate spikes for a hedgehog.
The little girl got a mishmash of chocolate and vanilla sponges, with chocolate buttercream (rather than whipped ganache) but needs must …. and the feedback was very positive :-) She loved the cake and mum cried with joy her little girl was getting something for her birthday!

So what other news do I have to tell you?
Oh yes …. My hubby and I have been invited out to dinner with a local Round Table group next week! I have to stand up in front of loads of people and tell them all about us …..
I am hoping they will offer us some money to buy some cake boards and boxes :-) so please keep your fingers crossed for me!

Oh and soon I will be telling you all about a cake and bake competition I have coming up in October … where everyone is invited to join in and win £100s worth of equipment :-)
I can’t wait!
I look forward to this event every year, as it is out main fundraiser

to see us through the year and keeping us baking for all those children who need us
