French Cake Breaks ~ Students Work #1: Students Work from a French Cake Break

I’ve taken some time to reflect on the work created by my students who came to France to learn with me during 2014.

I am always thrilled to watch confidence grow during a weeks intensive learning, from the unsure, nervous student slowly becoming more competent and proud of the skills they possess.

We had a range of classes this year, from absolute beginners, who had very little knowledge of cake decorating to returning students who had wanted a more challenging project ~ they all left with big smiles and in fact many have already re-booked to return this year for another challenge … they do like to keep me on my toes with this, getting my own creative juices flowing working on new ideas for everyone.

Here we have the ladies who attended the beginners week.

and some of their work from the week …

To the advanced week …..

And these returning ladies who wanted a more challenging project …. and so we made mermaids and what beautiful mermaids they are …..

What fantastic memories we all have of these weeks in France. I’ve found it really helps students to be able to spend time being able to practice at their leisure and cement what they had learnt during the week, especially when working with figures and modelling.

2015 will find a lot of these ladies returning for their second and third years and as I said earlier, challenging me to more exciting projects and whilst most weeks already being run will remain the same ~ Advanced and Mermaid, the Beginners week will see a move away from covering the cakes to focussing more on modelling skills. New classes are to be based on larger figures with internal armatures, sculpting the body and positioning the body, then dressing to a theme of your own choice, as always with my guidance, so one week will focus on a standing figure and the next on a seated figure, so maybe a fairy on a toadstool or 1950’s girl on an ice-cream parlour stool
