My daughter’s first birthday’s theme was “underwater/ocean,” and she had a cute outfit with baby seals wearing flowery swimming caps for the party. I decided to go with that design for her cake, so I made the top tier to look like the flowery swimming cap, then I hand-cut the baby seals from fondant and let them dry. I then painted the details on, and stuck everything to the cake using royal icing. The top seal is cut off because she was supposed to look as if she were coming out of the water, but I didn’t have enough time to pipe the waves on. The top tier was chocolate, and the bottom was vanilla cake, all filled and covered with vanilla buttercream and marshmallow fondant.
