Here’s a pic of my favourite cake to date. A rustic Silver Birch log wedding cake that I made for a wedding this weekend. Perfect design for an Autumn wedding.
I just LOVE making cakes that look like the real thing and I also love rustic themed weddings so when I was to create a stacked tree log wedding cake I was over the moon. The bride and groom gave me a pic of an Apple Tree log wedding cake (unable to find the name of the decorator who made it) which they’d found when researching cakes so I based the design on that but opted for Silver Birch instead as the pale beige and silvery grey tones worked well with the silk flowers the bride had given me for the posies, which I ended up making! I’m no florist but both the bride and I were really pleased with the finished arrangements. And I loved recreating the Silver Birch bark texture using edible paints and slicing into the sugarpaste to create the lined effect where the bark peels away.
My biggest challenge was working out how to transport it to the venue as the bottom tier was a 5 inch deep fruit cake which was heavy enough on it’s own, and the icing covered the edge of the cake board so it was difficult to lift. I decided to take each tier separately and stack at the venue. The bonus of it being textured bark effect was that any bumps and bangs could easily be painted over once the cake was set up!
Just wish I’d had this design for my own rustic festive wedding last December, it would’ve fit the theme perfectly! :)
