Christmas Ornament Cake

For our Christmas party at work I decided to practice some new techniques. The cake was red velvet frosted in cream cheese frosting. Royal icing poinsettias with chocolate snowflakes dusted with silver dust. I should have used a lilly nail to make the poinsettias but living in a rural area and no lilly nail to be had I proceeded with just a flat nail. The flowers could be a bit better but the passed. The chocolate I origanally melted to pour over the cake balls but it was too thick and didn’t leave a smooth surface so I poured into my new molds and wha la extra decorations for my cake. They added a nice unplanned touch. My ornaments on the cake are made out of giant cake “pops” lol though I wouldn’t recommend eating them. I used a cake that didn’t quite make the cut and put left over frosting in. Formed the balls and then covered in petite four frosting. Then decorated with royal icing. Not perfect but for a first try they pass for a noncommissioned cake.
