A returning customer wanted a special gym themed showstopper cake for her son’s 30th birthday.

She really wanted the topper to look like her son, complete with tattoos on his torso and upper arms and a similar hair style.

The topper was quite challenging to make; I used a polystyrene base for the bench press and built the body in stages. The most difficult part was attaching the weights as I was concern it may break.

I managed to make the topper work and kept the cake design very masculine with greys and blacks and used a brick impression mat to add effect. The final touches were applied using printed icing sheets silhouttes of gym equipment.
