My entry for Global Sugar Artists Network contest.
I have chosen the most beautiful and vibrant state for my theme, my very lovely state of Maharashtra. One thing that stands out for Maharashtra, is our devotion to Lord Vitthala or Vithobha (an incarnation of Vishnu).
The most outstanding display of this devotion to Lord Vitthala is the Dindi Yatra, a pilgrimage (or “wari”) on foot that culminates in Pandharpur on Ashadhi Ekadashi(11th lunar day of Hindu calendar month ‘Ashadha’). The pilgrims (or “warkaris”) travel 150 to 300 kilometers, depending on where they start. It has been performed annually for years and is the most unique tradition in the entire world, second to none.
In my creation, I am presenting a Maharashtrian woman wearing her culture on her with the saree and the best of her traditional jwellery, completely immersed in her devotion of Lord Vitthala & Rakhumai.
Her face glows with happiness and satisfaction while she carries them on her head on the way to Pandharpur.
“jaya jaya vithobha rukhumai !
jaya jaya vithobha rukhumai !”
