A little 7" cake for a baby shower with a chevron and bird theme. The fondant topper was modeled on a pair of antique children’s boots that will be in the new baby’s bedroom. I added the little nest and egg at the last minute. I’d like to say because I had a stroke of creativity, but actually it was to hide the wires that act as the bird’s legs and go all the way into the cake. (Dental brace wire, nobody panic!)
The final photo shows the cake at the party once I’d remembered to add the ‘baby’ plaque and the bird’s wings. Ooops!
I used a tutorial from Jessicakes blog for the chevrons, but they still took me five hours! I think my modeling chocolate was too soft. I’ll use fondant next time, for sure. I mis-measured the height of the cake which is why the chevrons stick up over the top. STUPID. However, I did measure the circumference accurately, so have no idea why there was a half inch gap at the back. Luckily, my friend asked if I could incorporate a few pompoms, so phew!
