My stepson’s 30th birthday cake.

When he was 6 his mum made him a pirate ship cake which he remembers as the coolest cake ever. It was his Mum’s idea to make him another pirate cake for this birthday.

With the masts, the cake measured around 1’9", so it was a big cake, but a big gang of drunk lads made fairly short work of it all the same!

I used a vege-friendly rice crispie treat base, and chocolate Madeira cake.

The three masts were dowels that I screwed into the base board because we were going to have to drive the cake a very long way, and it’s a tricky structure to be taking around roundabouts!

The sails were going to be pastilliage, but at the last minute I got the fear about adding the extra weight to the already top heavy structure and then driving it for hours so I cheated and used cotton fabric instead.

Currently the pastilliage sails are sitting on the side in an accusing manner…
