Here’s my submission for the Around the World in Sugar collaboration.
My inspiration for this creation was derived from Malaysia’s rich and diverse culture. After much consideration, I decided on the “Wau Bulan” or Moon Kite.
Unique and original, the Wau Bulan hails from the East Coast state of Kelantan (my hometown!), and is one of Malaysia’s national symbol alongside the Keris (Kris) and and Bunga Raya (Hibiscus). So remarkable is the Wau Bulan that even our national carrier, Malaysia Airlines, uses it as its logo.
The usual patterns and designs of the wau bulan are mostly floral….but I have chosen to use a part of a batik print for the top and a more traditional design for the bottom half.
There’s something so mystical about the wau bulan. The way it defies gravity, sways about and gracefully soars the blue skies to reach new heights are truly captivating.
