Lion Dance Cake

Lion Dance Cake

This is a cake I made for my grandpa 80th birthday…

I am from Hong Kong, and when I was young, I lived in the village, where I learnt all the old Hong Kong traditional culture, like Lion Dance. Whenever there is something to celebrate, they love to do this lion dance and burn the fire cracker. I actually know a bit how to hold the lion head and how to play the music as my grandpa was part of the lion dance team. So I am making this cake for him.

To him, family is always the first priority. So this cake is all about 7 grandchildren doing the lion dance for him.

This is me and my sister, the message there is wishing long life and good fortune…
This lion is more than 10" high!

They are in the music team…traditionally only boy/male can touch the drum

They are holding the gift : longevity bun

And he is doing the most dangerous part : bruning the firecracker
you can see he is holding the candy on his right hand

He was so happy that night, even he can name all the figurine there.

An absolutely fabulous creation, Karena! Your ganach is perfect and I don’t even know where to start with the incedible children and dragon!! So imaginative and brilliantly executed! Thank you for explaining a bit about the meaning of the Lion Dance, too.
