Sharing my piece which was done for UNSAs 2nd Annual Collaboration- ACTS OF GREEN.This is my first international collaboration and an absolute honor to be a part of it
The United Nations of Sugar Art is a coalition of Artist from around the World using edible mediums to raise Social awareness.
My creation for this collaboration is inspired from Italian Graffiti artist Blu’s mural titled E Pronta Torta (The Cake is Ready). This was his contribution for the Fame fest of 2010, a yearly event inviting top urban artists to create street and gallery works. In his piece, he chose to highlight the ever expanding waste dumps in Southern Italy and the toxic dumping problem.
Improper disposal of toxic waste is a global problem. The hazardous by-products of various industries in developed or rich countries are dumped inappropriately in poorer and developing countries. In these countries the toxic waste is literally disposed off, by cheap unsafe backyard methods – burning piles of heaped toxic waste, discharging acids into rivers, dump yards in agricultural land wherein they eventually find their way to the food chain. These materials can cause death, injury or birth defects to living creatures and contaminate lakes, rivers and the atmosphere.
Responsible recycling and safe disposal is the need of the hour.
I name my piece – REFUSE RECYCLE. REFUSE N DIE!
The issues facing our planet are vast and overwhelming but by supporting the National Geographic Society, this years chosen nonprofit, we are giving to an organization that has made a tangible effort to help reverse the damage that has been done and educate future generations.
“The National Geographic Society has been inspiring people to care about the planet since 1888. It is one of the largest nonprofit scientific and educational institutions in the world. Its interests include geography, archaeology and natural science, and the promotion of environmental and historical conservation.” http://nationalgeographic.org/
