There is an interesting story behind this cake. A customer called me a couple of weeks ago to order a small cake that she wanted to gift to her sister who had recently got married. Now, the bride was Indian. The groom, a German who had a Swiss lineage and therefore, considered himself more Swiss than German! The couple had a registered marriage in Germany and were now coming to India for the first time after marriage. So the bride’s sister wanted a no-fuss, buttercream cake (minimal fondant) that depicted both cultures. Tall order, that! After much discussion I decided to go forward with a very rustic look complete with wild Alpine flowers (edelweiss, alpine rose, daisies, and cornflowers) and the Swiss cowbell complete with a small Swiss flag. The groom, I was told was very fond of his cheese, so a slice of that went in too! The bride’s culture was depicted by an ornate elephant on the other half of the cake.
The effect was a rustic Swiss meringue buttercream cake filled with fresh strawberry compote and lemon curd. I was quite happy with how it turned out :)
