The brief for this cake was mermaids and stargazer lilies – the birthday girl loves both. Lovely things both except one is on land and the other underwater. I took my cue from Ariel and created the storyboard — our mermaid surfaces and sees a stargazer lily… since she’s never seen a real star (too far away), she instantly falls in love with the flower. Thus the sitting mermaid, mesmerised with the flower in her hands. (blush does it make sense?)

The top tier is handpainted with a stained glass effect to represent underwater life. The bottom tier has fondant onlays that are meant to be broken petals. Her scales are individually placed and she’s also got a weeny lily in her hair.
