This was my contribution to the UNSA Be RED “Getting to Zero” collaboration to raise social awareness for HIV and preventing transmission of HIV from mothers to babies.
My piece: I wanted to do something I hadn’t seen before, which was freehand sculpting a 3D face out of cookie dough. I also wanted to incorporate some hand painting. I was inspired by cemetery statues on a walk with my daughter, which began a loose idea where the mother had passed away leaving behind a healthy child. The piece evolved from there. The wafer paper ribbon connects mother to the earth and her child. ~ The portrait and base are iced with glaze, the bottom cookies are not iced at all. I hand painted directly on the “wood” cookie.
