My piece, “United”, represents the meaning of the wonderful Bakers Unite collab; bakers, and humans in general, uniting to help fight for and protect animals. “United” features a young woman, similar to myself, standing hand to trunk with a Borneo Pygmy Elephant! I am a huge animal lover, but must say elephants have had a special place in my heart since I can remember. The gentle Borneo Pygmy Elephant tends to be baby-faced with oversized ears, plump bellies and long tails. These precious and adorable creatures are said to be “a high conservation priority, yet they remain the least-understood elephants in the world.” Research hadn’t begun on this species until 2005! Their primary threat lies in the continuous loss of forests due to logging, expanding agriculture and new palm oil plantations. Additionally, the increasingly frequent human-elephant contact is seriously harming the species. These gentle giants don’t have a voice, so we must unite and speak for them!
