A little too much of a challenge for me I am afraid however, this is what my son wanted so I gave it my best shot!
Had to bake 10 cakes! Used Pyrex pudding bowls to make each of the pods (including the large one in the middle).
Iced them when they were frozen but sadly the kitchen was too hot (28 degrees) so I couldn’t achieve the smooth surface I have managed with the other cakes I have made – seems the crumb coat ‘un-set’.
The best part of the cake is the stand I made:) if I am honest it is where I am most comfortable. I obviously created the design based on the Pyrex dishes I own. I laser cut each of the platforms from 5mm acrylic but also made removable cake platters so that the cakes could be made, transported and assembled with ease. The aluminium ‘arms’ were machined on my lathe and then I created an internal thread so that the machine screws can hold all of the pieces together. I then had to bend each of the arms exactly the same using a pipe bender.
The cake was a simple sponge but I used vanilla paste rather than essence and also golden castor sugar which made it very tasty.
A friend at work has an icing printer so she was able to provide me with the shots for the windows of each of the pods – Very lucky I know – I never knew such a thing existed so readily.
I cheated on the main ‘trunk/stem’ of the cake by buying a Swiss roll and simply ‘stuffed that around the main support’ and iced over it.
Although the quality of finish is below par my son was blown away by it. I know it is a rare cake as I could hardly find anything like it on the Internet when I was designing it, especially one that was fully supported in the air.
The arms were simply covered in ready to roll icing but this was quite time consuming. sadly the figures are made from plastic.
Now I am just left with the stand – I might try and sell it or indeed rent it on eBay or something.
