This is a 10 inch light fruit cake with marzipan and fondant. In the eighties the Birthday girl loved to roller skate with her two Jack Russell dogs along the promenade in Lyme Regis, south of England. It is still her favourite place and I tried to incorporate Lyme Regis by adding the beach huts around the base and the sea shells, star fish, etc. “Harty Birdy” represents the ladies young daughters first attempts at saying “Happy Birthday” a phrase the family still uses today. The bas relief is made with modelling paste, half fondant and half flower paste, the dog lead is flower paste to enable it to set hard. All painting is done with dust colours, clear alcohol is also used where the colours are needed to be stronger.
