I made this cake as part of an igloo themed challenge with some friends. We had to cake an igloo, and add at least two 3D critters or trees or… Rather than just go with the standard white igloo, penguins and polar bear that everyone seems to default to, I stepped outside the box. I airbrushed a night scene, complete with mountains, on the bottom tier, then used buttercream to paint the Aurora Borealis onto the sky. Then I used colored mosaics for the igloo blocks, to sortof “reflect” the lights onto the ice. Add a polar bear hiding his head in the igloo, and a killer whale (geographically correct, where penguins are not), and voila!! My igloo cake!
Bottom tier is peanut butter cake with peanut butter buttercream filling and chocolate buttercream frosting. Igloo is red velvet cake with vanilla buttercream filling and frosting. Fondant accents.
