This was not about a cake, this was about a promise made from a mother to her son and not just any promise…….a pinky promise.
My son sees all the cakes I do and always asks, “is this one for me Mummy?” I always say “no, not this one, but you can have ANY cake you want for your birthday.”
The time approaches and 4 weeks before his party, my son changes his mind and wants an Emmet cake. Not a normal Emmet cake, a standing Emmet cake, but not just a standing straight up tall Emmet cake, a standing on one leg in running position, leaning forward with a piece of resistance on his back and a tracking device on the back of his leg. What do I say?
I say, “Ethan, I’m not sue I can do that cake, but I will try my very best.” Ethan says, “it’s ok Mummy, as long as you try your hardest, pinky promise?” He hands out his little finger to me. “Pinky promise” I say and we shake.
At 3am on Saturday morning I was sat on my kitchen floor with cake all around me. His running leg had disintegrated, his other leg was cracked and unusable, the structure had failed and I was only up to his waist. The party was at 11am the next day. What to do? What to do?
I didn’t shed a tear, I don’t think I even swore. I calmly cleaned up all the mess and started to make RKT so I could make new legs fast. I cast it and popped in the fridge and went to bed at 4.10am.
I got up at 8am and told Ethan what had happened and that Emmet wasn’t going to be in running position but WOULD be standing. I worked non stop until 7.10am this morning, I had done the cake. I grabbed an hours kip, then it was up, organised, packed and off to the party. An amazing party for my son.
So you see, it isn’t always about the cake, but the promises we make. Happy 5th Birthday little man, can’t wait to see what you challenge me with next year!
