I was so excited about making this cake as it was for my Son and Daughter-in-law. Things didn’t turn out exactly how I had planned!! Things started to go wrong with the cake beforehand, with the middle tier of my son’s wedding cake. My oven decided to play up big time at this point! Did nothing different to how I normally do with good results but attempt 1 came out like a biscuit!!! Attempt 2 looked perfect, lovely colour, skewer came out clean etc. Put it to cool and came and had a look a while later and it had sunk right through to the bottom where it obviously wasn’t cooked :0((( I was feeling rather deflated by this point. With attempt 3 I decided to split the mixture into 3 tins and this worked – phew. The next day filled , crumb coated and iced the 2 tiers. The top tier had already been done. Next the supports and stacking. All going well so far until I stood back and looked. The middle tier was far to high and looked ridiculous. The film reels between the tiers were cake dummies that I had adapted.
Took it off again and cut some off the bottom of the jinxed tier and back on it went. Now it was the right height but the 2nd reel looked stupid. Tried taking that off and now not using it. Didn’t like it :0( Cut the reel down to size and it looked much better. Finished it off and carefully boxed it up for the 3hr journey to the wedding!. Got the box out of the car, took it into the hotel, lifted the lid and quickly shut it again. Receptionist said everything OK to which I answered Noooo and I’ll be back in a bit. Went outside and burst into tears. The whole thing had fallen over :0((( After composing myself, I went back to see how much damage had been done. Not only had it fallen over but the whole bottom tier had collapsed and wasn’t salvageable. The kitchen took it to cut up so I was left with the other 2. It was fortunate that the reels were dummy ones as it saved the rest. I spent the next hour or so in their dining room trying to make it look respectable. Didn’t help having an audience of diners all making comments lol
It all ended up OK even though it was a tier short but I could see all the flaws. The main thing was that my son and his wife loved it and in the end that was all that mattered.

Kaye it looks brilliant!! You poor thing though!! Cant believe you had all that happen to you, I would have totally gone to pieces especially when it had fallen over!!! You did an amazing job pulling it all back together, and what a lovely photo of your son and his wife, they look thrilled with it, I love a happy ending!! I have my first wedding cake in 3weeks, even more scared after reading your mishaps!! Fingers crossed!!! Lol :-) x

awww thank you Elli. I would have done it differently if I’d known! I should have asked about the venue and if here was anywhere I could have put it together there. Then I could have transported the tiers separately but hindsight is a wonderful thing! lol
Yours will be wonderful and I can’t wait to see it :0) xx
