Dialing 2010...Mermaid cake flashback!

Oh, it’s been so fun seeing a lot of my favourite cake pages calling out for us to show our first cakes. This was one of mine dated back in 2010. I was super proud of this cake at the time – the top tier happened totally by accident. I had an idea in my head, and this was Not It.
Stealthy recovery and a “smoke and mirrors baby!” motto, I created rolling waves, tipped with RI and a nice slathering of piping gel (!!!!) brushed over the whole top tier. The coral were grape stems covered in RI. The piped dots were also a mistake. I was meant to do only 3 or 4 above a fish or seahorse as their air bubbles, but I did the first set smack in the front middle of the cake- with no sea life below it! AAAAAArrrgh. So the new design element was born and I went mad with the dot, dot here and a dot, dot there, everywhere a dot, dot…ahem.
And for those of you who noticed my very novice mistake of using a bottom cake board 1" bigger than my cake, well done! Oh and more fun facts about my mermaid cake? The top rock was a polystyrene takeaway container cut in half and molded into shape with the help of a blow dryer. I was ahead of my time people!! I don’t think I even knew about RCT, or even more obvious, making it out of cake! What a crack up. And YES, it was brand new and never used! I dunno about you, but I’m giving my 2010 self a big high five. Bhahahahaaahahah! Thanks so much for looking. Nina xoxo

LOLOL, you guys are so lovely. It’s hard not to cringe. I’ll be posting up some more old favorites here too, so tune in if you want a right giggle. Cakes Decor is a fun diary keepsake for the cakes I’ve made, I really need to use it!
