I made this cake on a bit of a whim for my Mum. I hadn’t planned on making a cake for her birthday but then I remembered when we were looking through Debbie Brown’s book one day and how much she liked the acorn fairy. I made changes to the colour of the leaves opting for bronze and brown rather than red, green and brown. And I changed the facial features. I have to admit that having attempted the arms 3 times I gave up on giving her fingers – they just kept falling off! Despite that I am thrilled at the finished cake. I spent a lot of my time last year making wedding cakes and through one issue to another I seemed to come up against an obstacle. By the end of the summer my cake passion had begun to dwindle but this cake has really restored my faith in my ability and my love of caking
