My first gingerbread house

Lots of lessons learned here; not least that the recipe for gingerbread in the specialist book I’ve got, while very yummy, is really not stable enough to use for commissions. Luckily this was just for us, or I’d have been starting again from scratch.

Another lesson was that I won’t be using caramel glue again. It’s pretty unforgiving when you stick the pieces together anyway, but the big problem was that the weather was so bad over christmas that the moisture in the air started collecting on the caramel and sugary water was beading and dripping down the walls, discolouring the decorations.

Still looked pleasing though. I’ll know better what to do for any commissions in the future, which was the point of making it after all.
