Finally, I have some time to post one of my latest cakes, made for the Sugar Skull Bakers 2014 collab! I was so honoured to be a part of another amazing collaboration that produced phenomenal pieces. Thanks to Dina for inviting me to take part and Berry for having me and Yuki for all her hard work putting together the files and official collab photos.

Dia de Muertos or the “Day of the Dead” is a Mexican religious holiday to celebrate the memory of our dearly departed, it has grown in popularity over the years. One of its icons is the sugar skull, the claverita, made with sugar and decorated with flowers, it’s where we get our name, so this is how we became Sugar Skull Bakers, a combination of the passion of 120+ bakers and cake designers from around the world. Death has never looked this SWEET!

For my contribution, I wanted to create something that would celebrate Dia de Muertos but in a fun and unconventional way. There were SO many phenomenal sculpted, 3D, gravity-defying or hand painted pieces shared early on and I will admit I was quite intimidated. I am not as skilled as others in this fabulous group with modelling or sculpting, or realistic detailing so in order to even come close to measuring up, I had to go outside-the-box and create a piece that I felt would make people smile instead.

We all know people love to dress up Minions in all kinds of outfits, so what better way to honour the Day of the Dead than having Dave the Minion donning the traditional makeup and clothing of the day as a Catrina? So here is my 3D ‘Davetrina’, created from cake, complete with headdress of roses made from wafer paper, painted face and period piece clothing, standing on a papel picado cakeboard. In the 3rd pic, you will see the gold fishnet stockings I made for him/her but unfortunately it is not visible in the wide shot. I think he/she turned out cute and I hope he/she brings a bit of humour and fun to all…and maybe a smile!

this is really super Violet … would like to smack your wrists though.. doing yourself down like that. Many of us could say that, think that but everyone has their own set of talents and yours are unique and VERY fabulous!! I love everything that you do. Cakes are not a contest … or at least, they shouldn’t be unless you are entering a contest, is what I mean. Lecture over. Pinned to the other skullies :) ps her little shoes and blingy ankles are the business!! :) :)
