Retirement cake for a geneticist

Retirement cake for a geneticist

This cake was made for a doctor specialising in genetics and molecular research who was finally retiring. The topper is a chromosome and around the cake we have double helix DNA strands.
Our little friend on the board is supposed to be a drosophila melanogaster, a kind of fruit fly which is commonly used in this kind of research. Although the fly is actually translucid with a brownish hue, we decided to make use of artistic license and make it black so that it would stand out on the bright yellow and green on the board. We only just thought of adding the little fly minutes before the cake was picked up so it was modelled in a rush and not as true to nature as we would have liked.
