DJ, I would cut out the individual black and white squares, but apply them to the cake using Jessica Harris’s wax paper transfer method. With this method, you can get them all lined up perfectly before you apply them to the cake. I used this method when I did the argyle pattern on my Golfing Dr cake, and it works great!
