Why not line your shell mold with cling wrap before pressing the fondant into it. Make the cling wrap hang pretty far out of the mold so you can use it to lift your fondant shell when dried. If you use fondant, you can add a lot of Tylose to help it dry. When I do that kind of think, I use Tylose until the fondant is very stiff and roll it to about 1/4 inch thick and let it dry as long as possible. You could also make pastillage, which is easy to make, for this one project (google recipe). You must work quickly because it drys very fast, but it is also very strong, much stronger than fondant or gum paste.
