Fondant Tutorials #1: Using Tappits v.2 a picture tutorial

Equipment

  • Silicone Rolling Pin
  • Scriber Tool
  • Icing Sugar
  • Tappits
  • Treated fondant (I use tylo powder)
  • Palette knife / pizza cutter

Roll out the treated fondant to 1-2 mm thick. The fondant should be nice and elastic and smooth. Sprinkle some icing sugar on to the board to prevent the fondant from sticking.

Cut the fondant into strips, these need to be slightly wider than the tappit letters.

Place the desired letter on the fondant strip and press down firmly

Turn the tappit over, sometimes the fondant strip will still be attached (see later picture) sometimes it comes away!

Rub the end of the silicone rolling pin over the letter, this removes the jagged fondant edges and gives a clean line. I used to rub the tappit backwards and forwards on the work board but this didn’t remove all of the messy edges!

Remove any letter middles that remain with a scriber tool. Any tool can be used, I find this one easier as it is very precise!

The letter should now ‘tap’ out. If it is stuck, gently prise it out with the scriber tool, I usually start with the edges, be careful not to fully pierce the fondant. If your fondant wasn’t elastic, the fondant will be virtually impossible to remove!

Ta dah!

If the fondant strip remains when the tappit is turned over, it’s not a problem! Carry on as before and lift the strip off once the rolling pin end has been rubbed over the letter. Tap out or ease out with scriber tool as before.

The finished article! Perfectly formed letters without the fuss and swearing!!
