So let me start off by saying this is my 1st tutorial to add here. I’m excited and I hope that it inspires others to try this cake and do a lot better job than me so I can improve my own talents.
Ok so let’s get started…
I created a template by using my projector and computer to enlarge the picture onto a wall so I could trace the outline and details. Also I used this to get the size of how big I wanted the cake. The other template was roughly how I was going to support the structure of the cake, and my own little notes on how to do it..
The next thing I did was make my base. Sorry I don’t have a picture of it. However I used a 1 inch thick styrofoam cut to 13X19, and 4 13X19 inch cake boards. I glued the cake board together in a set of 2, then glued one to each side of the styrofoam. This was really sturdy. I then drilled 2 hole for the threaded galvanized rods to go. This is for the legs. The hips are made the same as the bottom cake board with styrofoam sandwiched between two cake boards. This is cut to the size of my template. To attach the rods I used hexagonal nuts and washers. For the body structure I just used a wooden dowel rod hot filed into the hip structure base.
So the legs and head are made out of styrofoam that I shaped then covered in royal icing. The arms are rolled up tinfoil and paper. I was only going for a basic shape not perfect at this stage.
I am a visual person so I went ahead and loosely set up my frame of the cake as shown in the picture to see how it will all kind of look. I used a dowel rod to connect the arms to sit on top of a cake board. Straws were used to support each layer of cake.
Ok so check out 3D Robocop Tutorial #2 for more of how I made this cake.
