Thanks everyone for the lovely comments. Paul, I just a 10" cake/pastry ring – basically it looks like a huge cookie cutter that’s screwed onto a fondant covered plywood board. I coated the ring with white chocolate before placing my cake around the ring. I carved it and ganached it and decorated with fondant and crumbs of chocolate cake for the dirt. The sprockets were made of gumpaste mixed with fondant and the core piece is a styrofoam. The spokes are thick buccatini spaghetti noodles but you can use wooden skewers too =)
